An art dealer understands the true meaning of art. He must also know how to properly innovate and make outstanding ideas. Art dealers often coordinate with each other and most of the time view, critic, and keep themselves busy appreciating art and loving their work.
An art dealer can be compared to marketing and management workers who are trained and skilled with a certain work, filled with willingness, patience, and determination for working with colors and art. Selling paintings is more difficult now compared before. One must pay both the art and the efforts of the artist.
If you graduated with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or doctor’s degree in any field that involves art, is knowledgeable about how to run businesses, have good sense of communication, is good in writing, know more than one language, determined to create masterpieces, and have experiences in gallery work, it is best to consider this profession.
Before being art dealers, they first went through the apprentice stage and were under established dealers, where they molded themselves, were taught how to make deals, how to gain the money that they deserve, and how to satisfy costumers. Besides the talent, art dealer should know about the different types and genres, how much the old and upcoming artists are paid, recent affairs in their professions, and must have connections and contacts with other art dealer and updates for new clients and sales. Salary must not be a problem because it takes long to settle to a profession even with a degree.
A specific genre must be taken into account once the art dealer already knew that he/she is satisfied with the profession he/she settled in. In order to be well-known, the art dealer must be present in parties in order to be seen, also in public auctions, and art faire openings to gain more trust from people and attain more customers. Many art dealers who start out independently are financially prepared through savings or loans to put up with them until they stabilize their business. The main reason why they practice this is because the professions requires a lot of hours with uncertainty in its nature and the probability of having instability in the market.
Being in the profession of an art dealer also has drawbacks. Because the work may be unstable, customers may skew the deal or people may not be convinced in spending money for you as the artist or for your work. Possibilities like this will enable you to look for more things to do in life. But if you are sure of your decision and is willing to take a risk, then it sure is worth it.
